Graf Spee on the Rio de la Plata

Day 25, 31.10.2018, Montevideo, Uruguay,

We were last in Montevideo four years ago and that time we rented a car to look at the coast and countryside but it was not the most inspiring of trips. This time we stuck to the city on foot.

Montevideo , at least the old part of city, is, shall we say, a bit down-at-heel. it looks like it has seen better times, maybe in the 20’s and 30’s. Even so there are one or two interesting things. near the port there is a monument to the sinking of the pocket battleship Graf Spee in the outer roadstead of Montevideo in 1939. There is also the salvaged gunnery range-finder from the ship. There are a few plazas, churches and old buildings but nothing particularly spectacular. There is a covered market near the port that has the usual tourist tat but is mainly filled with steak and barbecue restaurants. Naturally, we sampled some as we’ve not had an excessive amount of meat since Rio.

Halloween is even celebrated on the Rio de la Plata and there was a spooky party onboard as we sailed towards Buenos Aires. I bagged a skull mask from the theatre wardrobe and dispensed poison cocktails to the crew, ha ha ha ha ha!!!!
